Parks and Reserves we Visit

Below you will find a brief description of the major National Parks and Reserves we visit on our Scheduled Tours. Many other parks not mentioned here are possible to visit with a Red Rhino Custom Safari.

KENYA

Masai Mara National Game Reserve
Masai Mara, dotted with acacia trees in vast savanna grassland with rolling hills, is located on the Kenyan side of the Serengeti Plain. This is safari land at its most grand and you will be stunned by the number of wild animals you will see. It is here that you may witness one of the greatest spectacles in nature-the "annual migration" where over one million animals cross into Masai Mara from the adjacent Serengeti National Park of Tanzania. The migratory animals reside in the Mara from July through September and then cross back into the Serengeti of Tanzania. Even without seeing the migratory animals, the park is rich in wildlife and not to be missed. "The Mara" is well-known for its great herds of plain's game, black manned lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant, as well as virtually every other kind of animal found in Kenya. Culturally, the Reserve is extraordinary because of the proud and colorful Masai who inhabit the area. An afternoon game drive is planned for today. Highlights during you time here include phenomenal game viewing on multiple safaris, and a walk along the banks of the Mara River where hippos and crocodiles are often seen in great numbers. We will arrange for a visit to a Masai village to explore and photograph traditional village life if you are interested. You have come to the heart of wild safari country.

Amboseli Park National Park
Amboseli is located in the heartland of Masai country and lies in the shadow of snowcapped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 19,340ft. The 1,259 square mile park is composed of open savanna plains, acacia woodland, swamps, and marshes. In the park game is easy to spot, and it is one of the best locations in East Africa to view wild elephant herds. Zebra, impala, wildebeest, Cape Buffalo, Grant’s Gazelle and Masai giraffe are all relatively easy to view and photograph. Other animals that we may see include lion, cheetah, warthog, baboon, jackal, hyena, flamingo, among others. Hemingway described Amboseli as being the "essence of Africa."

Samburu National Game Reserve
Samburu is interesting and the topography varied--the scenery rugged and dramatic--the arid landscape in sharp contrast to what you have witnessed in other parks. Samburu National Reserve, located along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, is much less traveled than many of the other Kenyan Parks. The beautiful scenery along the Ewaso is one of the great attractions of this reserve, with a strip of riverine forest and thicket where many animals are found during the heat of the day. The area boasts a wide variety of animals rarely found elsewhere--Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali ostrich, Gerenuk, for example. Lion, Cheetah, and Leopard Elephant, buffalo, Guenthers Dik-Dik, and crocodiles and hippos along the river banks are also present. Bird enthusiasts will be happy to hear that it is possible to spot as many as one hundred species of birds in a single day. Samburu is named after the colorful local tribe who dye their hair with ochre--the same color as the soil found in the landscape; they are pastoral relatives of the Masai.

Mt. Kenya Safari Club
The Mt. Kenya Safari Club is sprawled on the slopes of majestic Mount Kenya (Africa's second tallest mountain) and is one of the worlds most exotic and luxurious holiday resorts. All the amenities you would expect from such an establishment are here, including riding, golf, trout fishing, tennis, heated swimming pool and sauna, and regular performances by traditional dancers. You will be treated to gracious hospitality, and sumptuous dinning at this exotic establishment that is set over a 100 acre park with breathtaking views of Mount Kenya (weather permitting) . The resort was founded by the late actor William Holden and distinguished visitors such as Winston Churchill and Clarke Gable used to make regular visits here.

Aberdare National Park
The Aberdare National Park forms part of Kenya's central highlands and boasting one of the Kenya's largest forested reserves covering more than 289 sq. miles (750 sq. Km). You may have excellent views of Kenya's geological extremes: Mt. Kenya and the Great Rift Valley. The topography is diverse with deep ravines that give way to gentler valleys separated by steep hills and rocky outcrops and the mountain slopes are covered with heavy forest with tree ferns in places giving way to a bamboo zone at higher levels where the rare and elusive Bongo can be seen. The climate is wet and moist. Animal species include: Elephant, Buffalo, Giant Forest Hog, Leopard, Lion, Spotted Hyena, Eland, Bush Duiker, Black Fronted Red Duiker, Black Rhino, Jackal, Impala, Black Serval Cat, Black Genet, among others. Baboon, Sykes Monkey, and the black and white Colobus are some of the primates you may see. Birds are also plentiful. A highlight of the park is in staying at one of the famous lodges the park is famous for: The Ark or Treetops where one enjoys overnight floodlit game viewing.

Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is located near the city of Nakuru, the fourth largest in Kenya and Kenya's farming center. The lake is itself is a shallow soda lake that is one of the most famous bird sanctuaries in the world as seen in the movie "Out of Africa." At times vast concentrations of more than one million pink flamingos live on the lake, forming one of the most extraordinary spectacles in nature. Lake Nakuru National Park comprises both the lake and the surrounding area. The landscape of the park is a mixture of rocky hillsides, marshy grassland, and stunning acacia woodland. The wildlife at Nakuru is ample: besides the teeming bird life you may see rhino, zebra, waterbuck, buffalo, hippo, reedbuck, impala, baboon, and other game. An afternoon walk along the shore of the lake is a refreshing experience, and it is here that you can photograph flamingos relatively close up.

Sweetwater's Private Tented Camp
Sweetwater's Tented Camp lies in the heart of privately owned 24,000 acre Sweetwater's Game Reserve, enjoying magnificent views across the plains to the snowcapped peaks of Mount Kenya. The camp is very eco-friendly, offering activities related to its surroundings. Tree-planting, camel rides, bird and nature walks, day and night game drives and walking safaris just to name a few. The tents are set under thatch, with en-suite facilities and private verandah. 25 of the tents overlook the waterhole with some of the tents being built on stilts to gain a better view of the waterhole. Included in your stay here includes is the entrance fee to the Sweetwater's Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Information Center, a boat ride on the river (weather permitting) to see the young chimps and also to Morani's Boma which includes the Visitor's Information Center.

Tanzania

Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is situated in a vast valley offering wonderful views over the savannah. The area is famous for its magnificent baobab trees which dot the rolling hills. The park is one of the most beautiful in Tanzania, and it is second only to Ngorongoro in its density of Tanzanian wildlife. There are often large herds of elephant that inhabit the region and there is a host of other animals including lion, giraffe, impala, gazelle, waterbuck, buffalo, zebra, which can often be seen in abundance.

Lake Manyara National Park
Manyara is famed for its tree-climbing lions, bountiful bird life, and large numbers of hippos. The park is a combination of mahogany forest, marsh and grasslands. Manyara is two-thirds water, one-third dry land and home to a spectacular concentration of game for such a small area. The park is a flash of green amid an otherwise parched landscape. Over 350 species of birds populate the park.

Ngorongoro Crater (Ngorongoro Conservation Area)
Down the 1900 ft. Crater wall from the rim of this spectacular extinct volcano lies Africa's largest permanent concentration of wildlife. Ngorongoro has been referred to as the eighth wonder of the world and the "Garden of Eden." Ngorongoro towers above the Northern Serengeti Plain and it is celebrated as containing some of the most magnificent scenery in the world; its 105 square mile crater is the largest unbroken crater on Earth and is packed with just about every species of wildlife found in East Africa. Large plains game permanently inhabit the area and game viewing and scenery is sensational. Some 30,000 animals live in the crater and, because the grasses are short, game is easily spotted and can often be approached quite closely. It is also one of the few parks in Africa where rhinos are relatively easy to locate.

Serengeti National Park
On the Serengeti Plain, one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries on the Earth, an estimated 2500 lions live and there are more cheetahs here than anywhere else in Africa. Hyena, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, ostrich, hippo, and other animals can be seen in abundance. Covering more that 5,700 square miles, the Serengeti is breathtaking terrain composed of acacia savannah, grass plains, and dense woodland grouped around kopje (strange rock formations). It is estimated that one million animals live in the area with more than one-third of them being wildebeest. The park probably has more large animals than any other protected area on earth.
